Another Source’s client, Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, is recruiting a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead the financial operations and strategic planning for the Foundation. This position offers a hybrid work schedule with three days a week onsite in Pomona, CA, where you’ll get the opportunity to oversee critical financial initiatives, drive strategic growth, and collaborate with university leadership on impactful business decisions.

As the largest employer of students on campus, the Foundation offers valuable work experience and hands-on training to approximately 1,500 Cal Poly Pomona students each year. The Foundation offers positions in various fields; whether it is in the area of technology, science, retail, culinary arts, hospitality, management, leadership or research grants, these student employees participate in Cal Poly Pomona's learn-by-doing philosophy and acquire practical skills in their designated field of study.
The Foundation also contributes operating support to nearly 1,100 Foundation and scholarship programs every year, including Bronco Athletics and the Norman J. Priest Scholarship. In addition, the Foundation administers grants and contracts, contributes to campus security, and supports several university publications. The Foundation contributes over $1 million annually to Cal Poly Pomona.
Summary
Under the leadership of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for carrying out the mission and vision as it pertains to financial plans and policies, daily organizational financial activities, internal controls, financial risk management, and building/maintaining relationships with fiscal providers. The CFO will collaborate with the CEO and serve as a key advisor to the organization’s leadership and Board of Directors on major financial and strategic business issues and decisions. The CFO will staff the Audit, Finance, and Investment Committees, support other Board needs as designated, and keep the Board apprised of the financial conditions.
What you will be doing:
- Oversee business matters and reports to the CEO on fiscal and business management including banking, legal affairs, registrations, filings, tax returns and investments.
- Responsible for compliance with financial best practices, internal policies and procedures, CSU regulations, and other applicable Federal and State regulatory agencies at all times.
- Prepare the annual budget for review and approval by the CEO and Board of Directors.
- Develops accounting procedures and systems and monitors all accounting practices to ensure they meet federal, state, county and other funding/contract guidelines.
- Supervise the preparation for the annual and periodic internal, governmental, and other audits of the organization’s financial position; implement and respond to findings should there be any. Manages all internal and external audits with independent external and CSU auditors.
- Establishes the direction for maintaining the Foundation budgetary system including timetables for budget preparation and the development of departmental budget factors and standards. Directs staff action required to complete responses to financial audit recommendations.
- Oversee the Grant Post-Award office managing federal, state, and private funds.
- Collaborate with senior leaders on operational and strategic issues as they arise; provide recommendations based on financial analysis and projections, long-term proformas, return on investment, and revenue/expense analysis.
- Directs and coordinates with appropriate staff for the administration of the endowment and restricted program funds held by the Cal Poly Pomona Philanthropic Foundation in a manner which will meet the goals and objectives of the Philanthropic Foundation.
Financial Management
- Develop financial data gathering and operating systems to facilitate business and financial informed decision-making.
- Ensure the effective delivery of routine financial services and operations of the agency including cash management, cashiering, accounts receivable, accounts payable, project management, and general ledger maintenance.
- Directs and oversees the Foundation investment programs in accordance with investment policies established by the Board of Directors.
- Reviews and approves expenditures and financial commitments.
- Monitors and advises department directors regarding fiscally related issues and problems. Safeguards the assets of the corporations and manages agency cash.
- Ensures that business functions meet and comply with regulatory agencies, program regulations, and payer requirements.
- Ensures all appropriate policies and procedures are in place.
- Ensures compliance with site and program audits, program reporting and program grant renewals.
- Oversees the implementation and maintenance of a risk management program including liaison with insurance programs, consultants, and the University.
Communication/Collaboration
- Maintain strong working relationships with banking and other financial institutions. Participates in Executive and Leadership Team meetings and works cooperatively with others to assure smooth operations.
- Work closely with management team and staff to ensure comprehension of budget and to aid in budget planning.
- Financial Process Enhancement with a focus on continuous improvement
- Maintain accounting and budget software and supporting systems to ensure that financial information is current, accurate, and adaptable.
- Present proposals and updates to staff, university partners, and the Board of Directors, including periodic training sessions.
- Partner with the University internal auditor, AVP of Finance, and others on various projects and ongoing needs.
- Develop and maintain effective data-based means to track program/product income and expenditures and other key data.
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS degree with seven or more years in a management or executive role.
- Five or more years of experience in fiscal management and executive operational management experience in private, federal, or state government programs, prefer experience in a non-profit environment.
- Experience in organizing and directing multiple teams and departments
- Experience in planning and leading strategic initiatives
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong project-reporting skills, with focus on interdepartmental communications
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Business, Finance, or a similar degree is preferable.
- CPA is preferable.
- Certified Auxiliary Services Professional (CASP) is preferable.

The anticipated yearly salary range for this position is: $138,019 - $186,325 depending on experience.
