IRC BACKGROUND:Founded in 1933, the IRC is a leading organization providing relief, protection, and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression throughout the U.S. IRC in San Diego has resettled over 31,000 refugees to San Diego County over the past 48 years and provides numerous program services. In San Diego, the IRC opened its doors in 1975 and has grown to serve approximately 7,000 refugee and immigrant individuals from 115 countries of origin each year through 5 different departments.
SCOPE OF INTERN WORK: Citizenship Education Program Interns work with the Citizenship Instructor to run the Citizenship Test Preparation Courses offered to Legal Permanent Residents (LPRs). These courses prepare LPRs for the civics and English portions of the U.S. Citizenship test, teaching students basics language skills and civics knowledge to help them participate fully in their lives as American citizens.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist instructor in outreach actions to recruit new students.
Input data (student data and test results) into various databases.
Prepare materials, lead break-out sessions with students and assist in classroom activities.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Interns will gain skills in managing and implementing a Citizenship Education program.
Interns will gain familiarity in cross-cultural communication and teaching English and civics to speakers of other languages.
Interns will gain knowledge in the process of naturalization.
Minimum Qualifications:
REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum of 2 years of post-secondary education is preferred but not required.
Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding client information.
Strong verbal and written skills in English; Punctual and reliable.
Strong intercultural skills; demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from other cultural backgrounds.
Strong computer skills.
Knowledge of Arabic or Farsi/Dari is preferred but not required.
Willing to work at both City Heights and El Cajon offices.
This position reports to the Citizenship Instructor.
Compensation: This is an unpaid internship opportunity.
Working Environment:
The Citizen Education Program Internship is in-person at the San Diego office.
Required Weekly Hours: 10-15 hours.
San Diego Office hours are scheduled Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm PST.
