Duties and Responsibilities:
Primary Purpose:
The Human Resources Generalist I is responsible for HR-related duties and projects in support of the Office of Human Resources. This position is responsible for assisting with a variety of human resources functions, primarily supporting the payroll processing for AUM. This position may also assist in benefits and compensation, FMLA/medical leave and workers’ compensation, on-the-job injury reporting, and other matters. This position serves as a contact for all general HR related questions with a specialized focus on payroll and is responsible for providing a high level of customer service to the University community.
- Enter and maintain information for all employees to ensure data integrity with all HRIS systems.
- Assist with payroll processing in an automated system utilizing Kronos and Banner with a strong focus on attention to detail, and resolve problems that may occur as it relates to payroll and leave administration. Responsible for performing all facets of time and attendance procedures to include audits of timekeeping data, and timely resolution of associated issues. Accurately execute time and attendance processing and interface with AU payroll in accordance with established pay cycle deadlines.
- Compile benefit information for employees and maintain knowledge of benefits in order to convey information regarding benefit options to employees, retirees and beneficiaries and assists employees with benefit enrollment and attaining optimal coverage, and complete, verify, and process forms and documentation for administration of benefits to include health/life/disability insurance, workers compensation, and retirement.
- Regularly correspond with employees on matters relating to payroll, benefits, and compliance issues both orally and in writing in a manner that accurately conveys information and facilitates understanding.
- Retain a working knowledge of criteria for exempt and non-exempt employment; compensation and leave policies, FLSA, FMLA, federal, state and local payroll requirements, and related regulations; and works with supervisors to ensure compliance.
- Assist with administrative tasks related to workers’ compensation, on-the-job injury reporting, FMLA/Medical Leave, salary continuation and COBRA, medical, dental, vision, life, and AD&D insurance, long-term disability insurance, employee assistance program, flexible spending programs, retirement programs, workers compensation insurance and wellness initiatives.
- Assist in monitoring and resolving employee questions and concerns by providing accurate and timely information.
- Assist supervisors with training related to payroll and benefits, updating content and corresponding documentation to ensure participants are informed on these processes from the time they are on-boarded and throughout their career.
- Prepare documentation to respond to Unemployment Compensation claims using wage, employment, and termination information obtained from prior employee’s department and HR records.
- Provide administrative support including compiling data, running reports, maintaining detailed and accurate documentation, and other related tasks using secure platforms including Banner, Kronos, and Xtender.
- Exercise sound judgment in all matters, consistently communicate with the HR Team and other key partners to research and identify solutions and alternatives that align with policies and best practices.
- Proactively identify and resolve challenges related to Human Resources workflow and processes; suggest improvements to employee communications and related materials.
- Assist with maintaining Human Resources policies and procedures; complies with current human resources and compliance laws and practices.
- Maintain confidentiality of human resources information at all times.
- Provide support to the overall functions of the Office of Human Resources as needed.
- Perform other related duties as required and assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Thorough understanding of all Federal, State and local laws regarding employment and compensation.
- Ability to work in an institution of higher education on varied matters across multiple disciplines, and of high complexity.
- Ability to effectively manage workload in an environment driven by established deadlines.
- Ability to proactively communicate, analyze, and problem-solve, particularly in cases where limited or ambiguous information exists.
- Excellent oral and written presentation skills; highly effective and proactive communicator.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, Banner, Kronos, Xtender, Outlook, and presentation experience.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance, business, human resources, or related field required.
- Two years of payroll processing, administrative operations, or closely related experience, with preference given to experience in a higher education system.
- Professional designation in HR preferred.
