Job Description
Researcher assistant to help manage research efforts under the supervision of Drs. Ben Bohrer and Sheila Jacobi in the Department of Animal Sciences, for a period of two and a half years in muscle biology/meat science and swine nutritional physiology; performs basic science and applied research in the field of muscle biology and swine nutrition and gut health; manages laboratories, assist in research projects, leads research projects, plans and performs complex experiments and procedures; coordinates, collects, and analyzes data; prepares research results for publication in reports, papers, presentations, conference and other media; supervise over assigned research students; assists with laboratory techniques and operates laboratory equipment; performs basic lab maintenance duties; maintains lab supplies; and other duties as assigned.
Required Experience: Masters degree with research experience required; previous experience in handling and managing pigs, animal harvest and tissue collections, work with neonatal milk pig trials, weaning piglet nutrition, and grow/finish pig research. Experience with intestinal cell culture, collection and processing blood and tissue samples for RNA, DNA, protein, and intestinal cell culture. Work with microbial challenge assays. Analyzing data with SAS statistical software and data analysis. Strong communication skills and ability to work well with others in team environment.
Desired Experience: Strong analytical and writing skills; Ability to work in an independent environment with moderate supervision; Ability to learn new research protocols and techniques; Requires successful completion of a background check; selected candidate may be requested to complete a pre-employment physical including a drug screen.
80% - Manages research laboratory and leads and assists in experiments on research aims for research groups; Develops experimental plans for in vitro and in vivo studies in discussions with PIs; Conducts sample collections, applied, molecular, cellular, developmental and biochemical research; Troubleshoot and customize experimental tools to respond to research questions; Generate clear and timely records of experimental work; Assist in data analysis; Develop figures and manuscripts for publications and reports; Communicate ideas and results with team members.
20% - Assists a faculty member in attaining the goals of specified research by lab management and participating in research planning; Oversee team’s junior members.
