Lecturer III to teach courses in the Music Program and to serve as the head of this program. The RC is a four-year, living-learning community and a unit within the College of LS&A serving the undergraduate student population on the University of Michigans Ann Arbor campus. This is a full time, non-tenure track position with a university-year appointment period beginning August 25, 2025.
RC MUSIC PROGRAM
The Residential College Music Program (https://lsa.umich.edu/rc/current-students/curriculum/music-program.html) educates and empowers students of all levels, including beginners, through process-oriented teaching and music making. It is led by a team of multi-disciplinary musicians. Courses in the RCMUSIC program include Music Composition, Theory, Foundations, Improvisation, Group Voice, Found Instruments, and ensembles (Chamber Music, Chinese Music, Afro-Cuban). The RC Music Program differs from other performance programs on campus in its commitment to student-led interdisciplinary learning and broad music-making opportunities for students outside the College-Conservatory environment.
Responsibilities*
The successful candidate will serve as head of this program and teach five courses throughout the academic year (fall and winter terms), beginning August 25, 2025.
Teaching responsibilities
The successful candidate will teach the existing Creative Musicianship music composition class (RCMUSIC 350) and its companion music theory lab (RCMUSIC351). This course engages genres and practices beyond the Western musical canon, opening the study of composition to students of all levels with creative pedagogies and non-traditional approaches. Other courses may include the existing Music Improvisation and Electronic Music classes or new ones aligned with the programs mission and suited to the candidates specialities. These courses will contribute primarily to the Music Program but course offerings could also contribute to other RC programs, such as the Arts and Ideas Program (the RC humanities major) or the First-Year Writing Seminar Program (intensive writing courses that satisfy the first-year writing requirement). Additional duties include participation in college- and program-wide activities.
Administrative responsibilities
The responsibilities of the program head for the Music Program are listed below; these extend throughout the academic year.
Required Qualifications*
Master of Music, Master of Arts in Music, or advanced degree in an interdisciplinary arts program relevant to music prior to the start date of the position.
