Essential Job Duties

Join our Utilities and Engineering team as a Meter/Relay Technician, where you’ll play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing our campus’s high-voltage electrical distribution systems. This position offers the opportunity to independently troubleshoot, maintain, and upgrade electronic and digital control systems, including SCADA, to support a reliable and secure electrical infrastructure for NC State. If you’re skilled in high-voltage electrical systems and SCADA operations, we encourage you to apply and contribute to our essential campus utilities team.

Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electronic and digital control systems related to high-voltage campus electrical distribution (12.47kV, 23kV, 115kV, 230kV)
  • Execute maintenance and upgrades on both hardware and software components of control systems, including relays, meters, and breakers
  • Perform preventive maintenance on relays, utility meters, and related control devices to ensure system reliability
  • Install new relays, utility meters, and other control devices as part of campus electrical infrastructure enhancements
  • Design and develop graphics for Human-Machine Interface (HMI) screens within the SCADA control system
  • Operate SCADA systems to monitor and control the campus’s distribution network, ensuring continuity and security
  • Identify and solve complex issues related to high-voltage protective devices and SCADA/self-healing grid systems, applying in-depth trade knowledge
  • Recommend and implement effective solutions for uncommon system maintenance challenges
  • Support the security and operational integrity of SCADA systems by maintaining up-to-date knowledge of best practices and emerging threats

  • Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment of safety glasses, safety shoes, arc-flash fire retardant clothing and ear plugs

Minimum Experience/Education

Associate’s Degree in Electronics; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the high impact to safety and reliability of the electric distribution system and campus operations that can occur through the operation and maintenance of relays, meters, and the SCADA system. Knowledge of protective relay and metering schemes
  • Knowledge of HMI construction that allow for safe and reliable operation of the SCADA systems
  • Strong working knowledge of electronics, thermal plant controls and safety protocols. Ability to use diagnostic and instrumentation test devices – both standard and non-standard

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to provide computer hardware/software/network skills necessary to maintain/repair/improve electric distribution system operations
  • Ability to diagnose and repair relays and meters from different vendors such as SEL/RTAC, Siemens, and ElectroIndustries
  • Ability to identify problems, determine possible solutions, and actively work toward a resolution

  • A valid North Carolina driver’s license must be obtained within 60 days of start date and must be maintained
