Work Schedule and Hours
This position may work a 12-hour fixed shift on days or nights as assigned. May also work a traditional 40-hours Monday-Friday work week if assigned. This position works evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events as needed. This position is subject to Emergency Call Back for emergencies on short notice as required.

Position Summary
The main purpose of the Police Sergeant and the University Police department is to protect and serve the students, faculty, staff, and visitors of UNC Asheville through law enforcement and crime prevention. The Police Sergeant must possess knowledge and skills in the following areas: patrol operations, investigations, leadership and supervision, community policing, and communications skills.
In addition to upholding local, state, and federal laws, the Police Sergeant will respond to and investigate crimes and accidents as needed, as well as perform administrative tasks, provide training, and perform other specialized roles as designated by the department.
The Police Sergeant will serve as a supervisor and will lead supervision within the University Police department. This includes managing schedules to ensure growth and adequate staffing, reinforcing established work expectations, providing officer and scene management guidance, directing resources in support of department goals, evaluating performance, conducting shift briefings, reviewing reports completed during a shift, interpreting laws and policies, line and equipment inspections, and conducting yearly officer performance evaluations.
In the absence of command staff, the Police Sergeant will serve as the acting Commander. The Sergeant is responsible for general call response and police duties during their regularly assigned shift.

This position description outlines the duties and responsibilities applicable to the Police Supervisor I, II, III. Designation as Police Supervisor I, II, III will be assessed based on overall experience, education, and certifications.

Required Education/Experience/Skills
Police Supervisor I: A minimum of an associate degree (or 60 hours of college credit) and 4 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience. Certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible for out of state lateral hires.

Police Supervisor II: 3 years of experience as a Police Supervisor with the agency. At the discretion of the campus hiring authority, documented service as a sworn law enforcement officer at a substantially equivalent classification (rank) may be accepted for lateral hires from outside agencies. Current certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned officer or certification eligible for out of state lateral hires.

Police Supervisor III: 6 years of experience as a Police Supervisor with the agency. At the discretion of the campus hiring authority, documented service as a sworn law enforcement officer at a substantially equivalent classification (rank) may be accepted for lateral hires from outside agencies. Current certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible for out of state lateral hires.

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills
  • Possession of current NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer.
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Six years of campus law enforcement experience or School Resource Officer.
  • Five or more years as a law enforcement officer with experience and training in police supervision.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Computer skills including proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software. Familiarity with University and law enforcement technology to include DCI, NCIC, eWarrants, eDiscovery, CJLEADS, Maxient, Banner, records management systems, security camera systems, etc.
  • Knowledge of the Clery Act.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
This position requires leadership skills, excellent interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication, the ability to function under significant pressure or in times of crisis, and proficiency to receive and maintain confidential information. It is critical to have experience in understanding and addressing the interests and needs within a highly diverse environment, including demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, faculty, and community partners that are built on confidence and trust.
