Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY 

The Department Chair for Health Sciences will provide oversight to the Health Science programs. The Chair will lead, supervise, and collaborate with faculty and adjunct instructors in the department as well as across departments to support the college vision, mission, and strategic plan. The Chair will utilize excellent communication, organization, and detailed orientated skills to effectively manage the programmatic requirements and timelines. 
The Chair shares a commitment to and exemplifies principles of equity, diversity and inclusion in all work done within the department and as part of the college community. The Chair embraces and exemplifies the college values of respect, collaboration, quality, access, diversity and inclusion when participating in a variety of institutional initiatives and activities, serving on committees, being a member of the leadership team, and representing the college, the division, and the department to assigned groups and tasks. The Chair, as faculty member, teaches courses in their field of expertise and maintains a commitment to high-quality instruction and high-quality support. In addition to teaching, the Chair will be responsible for managing student clinical rotations and ensuring strong community partnerships. 

OVERVIEW OF CCA  
The Community College of Aurora (CCA) is a dynamic institution that is committed to serving its diverse student population through innovations in instruction and student support founded on principles of equity and inclusion. CCA is a public, two-year community college serving Aurora and east metro Denver and has been designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) by the U.S. Department of Education.  CCA enrolls 11,000 students annually, over 62% of whom are students of color, including nearly 32% Hispanic students. 65% of CCA students receive some type of financial aid, including 52% of whom receive Pell grants, and nearly two-thirds are first-generation college students. In addition to traditional degree and certificate programs, CCA offers non-credit professional development courses, customized training, and economic and workforce development resources to employer partners and individual professionals seeking to enhance the capacity and productivity of their workforce or individual knowledge and skills. The college centers our Inclusive Excellence work and applies an equity lens to everything we do.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership and Program Management: 
  • Lead course and program development as well as statewide curriculum changes, working with the Curriculum Committee for a timely and accurate reflection in the college catalog. 
  • Maintain expertise in the subject area and effectively teach assigned courses; develop lesson plans, activities and assessments that lead students to successful attainment of course competencies and outcomes. 
  • Engage in professional development activities to stay current with advancements in the fields of education, phlebotomy, and health science.
  • Collaborate with the Dean, faculty, staff and instructors in the design and implementation of departmental plans that support the college mission, vision, strategic plan and equity and inclusion goals. 
  • Collaborate with colleagues on interdisciplinary projects and initiatives. 
  • Demonstrates a high level of initiative and commitment towards program growth and community partnerships. 
  • Exemplify and sustain a positive climate of collaboration and inclusiveness by cultivating partnerships with external and internal stakeholders. 
  • Manage clinical agreements and is primary contact for clinical sites and educators. 
  • Manage student clinical rotations in My Clinical Exchange, clinical scheduling software. 
  • Adhere to clinical site requirements, including OSHA, HIPAA, BLS certification and health requirements. 
  • Manage onsite inventory and laboratory cleanliness. 
  • Foster a culture of academic excellence and culturally relevant pedagogy while also leading efforts oriented to closing the gap for historically undeserved and excluded students. 
  • Mentor faculty and instructors for professional growth by offering professional learning opportunities and facilitating the attendance of those provided by the college and professional organizations. 
  • Conduct regular program reviews according to college guidelines and utilize findings and data to improve programs and operations and increase student achievement. 
  • Coordinate departmental promotion with the college Strategic Communications office, Center for Recruitment and Orientation, and Advising. 
  • Facilitate resources for extracurricular events sponsored by the department and attend them. 
  • Develop and submit accurate course schedules based on enrollment trends and program curricula. 
  • Monitor course enrollment and open or close courses based on registration reports. 
  • Develop and oversee operating budgets. 
  • Approve and oversee concurrent enrollment instructors and courses.
  • Contribute to the college community through committee service, outreach and participation in college events. 
Teaching:
  • Maintain expertise in the subject area and effectively teach 12 credits per academic year in the assigned courses; develop lesson plans, activities, and assessments that lead students to successful attainment of course competencies and outcomes. 
  • Be knowledgeable about pedagogy/andragogy, methods, retention, inclusion, and assessment of outcomes; be willing to participate in coaching/mentoring. 
  • Promote student success through inclusive, accessible, multi-modal, challenging, equity minded, student-centered, and engaging instruction. 
  • Provide proactive and holistic support for students; this includes providing outreach, differential instruction with high expectations, and high support for students of varied preparedness. 
  • Foster a positive culture of assessment of student learning. 
  • Evaluate and supervise faculty and adjunct instructors. 
  • Develop and coordinate community outreach programs and alternative course formats. 
  • Maintain accurate records according to department/division/college expectations and guidelines, including Instructional Guideline 2.11, in the college LMS-Desire2Learn (D2L). Submit required records according to published instructions and deadlines. 
  • Evaluate student performance in a constructive manner, timely, and effective manner as stated in the course syllabus. 
  • Supervises and enforces appropriate safety procedures in the laboratory setting. 
  • Flexible in teaching in different modalities including, in-person, hybrid, laboratory, and online. 
  • Flexible teaching hours including day, night, and/or weekend courses. 
Assessment of Student Academic Achievement:
  • Mentor faculty and instructors in design and implementation of teaching and learning strategies aimed at improving student learning based on assessment findings and utilization of disaggregated data. 
  • Incorporate student centered practices such as including student feedback, student experiences, and/or student learning outcomes in decision-making. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Health Science related profession earned from a regionally accredited institution. 
  • Eligible for CTE credentialing in the state of Colorado. 
    1. Either 18 semester hours of related coursework for the pathway OR possession of a valid/current state unencumbered professional license in discipline and/or certification in the appropriate skill or trade area. 
    2. 4,000 hours of verifiable paid non-teaching experience within the past 5 years related to Health Sciences. 
  • Current knowledge of standards and guidelines for administration of Health Services programs. 
  • Use of computer technology including LMS familiarity (Canvas, D2L, etc.), Microsoft Office and educational technology. 
PREFERRED QUALIFCIATIONS
  • Master’s Degree in a Health Science related profession earned from a regionally accredited institution. 
  • One (1) year teaching experience in post-secondary and/or vocational/technical education location including online and in-person delivery methods. 
  • Certified Medical Assistant with experience in phlebotomy techniques with two years of clinical experience, and/or a Registered Nurse with experience in phlebotomy techniques with two years of clinical experience. 
  • Supervisory experience. 

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Salary Range: Anticipated starting salary range is $80,000.00 annually. This salary is determined by the qualifications of the selected candidate balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information. CCA offers an excellent benefit plan, including generous leave, holiday, and education benefits. Full time employees immediately upon hire earn 15 hours a month annual leave and 10 hours a month sick leave.
