Western Maine Community Action/ Executive Director/ E. Wilton, Maine

Western Maine Community Action (WMCA), a social service agency providing assistance to low- and mid-income families living in the western mountain region of Maine, is currently seeking an experienced Executive Director for the E. Wilton, Maine location.

The Executive Director is responsible for the overall leadership of WMCA and the implementation of its mission and goals through strategic initiatives that affect the organization's capacity to advocate for clients and deliver effective services.

This key role will create a positive work environment for staff and volunteers, foster a culture of teamwork and open, respectful communication, build revenue streams of existing services, and identify and evaluate diversification strategies, including the development of a robust endowment program.

The successful candidate will be community and mission driven with the ability to cultivate and steward relationships with staff, the Board of Directors, donors, local and federal leaders and the community at large. Oversee all Agency activities including financials, policies and procedures, personnel, professional standards, management responsibilities and service excellence.

Requirements for the Executive Director:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience, in a relevant field (e.g., nonprofit management, social work, public administration, education) is required. An advanced degree is preferred.
  • Certified Community Action Professional (CCAP) credential is a plus.
  • A minimum of 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience in nonprofit leadership, preferably in the poverty alleviation sector. Executive Leadership in a non-profit, or social services sector, is highly valued.
  • Knowledgeable of the public policies, services and issues affecting Agency clients in the Tri-County area.
  • Passionate spokesperson, advocate and is able to articulate the Agency vision to clients, staff, the community, government, and the board.
  • Proven results in resource development.
  • Maintain a flexible work schedule to meet demands of serving three WMCA counties.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with proficiency in public speaking.
  • Strong work ethic with a high degree of energy.
  • Effective leader, collaborator and negotiator and strategic, innovative planner.
  • Possesses analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.

Responsibilities of the Executive Director:

  • Financial acumen—responsible for the overall financial management and operational integrity of the agency, including agency compliance with all contract and program requirements.
  • Provides leadership excellence to coach staff, manage and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives in an organization delivering multi-functional social services in rural areas.
  • Maintains understanding of the complexities and interconnectedness of issues contributing to poverty.
  • Improves and enhances WMCA's corporate health and standing in the community.
  • Promotes inter-Agency and intra-Agency collaboration to support WMCA's mission.
  • Ensures programs are responsive to clients in a timely and personal way.
  • Pursues programmatic opportunities aligned with strategic goals and financial integrity.
  • Stays current with knowledge of communities served by WMCA
  • Builds relationships and collaborations with state, local, and federal government agencies, and officials.
  • Creates, maintains and deepens relationships with key partners. Is always vigilant for opportunities to collaborate with others to improve services for low-income families and individuals.
  • Serves as Agency representative to the public and spokesperson for WMCA on all public policy matters, legal complaints, media inquiries, etc.
