Campus Police Officer

Davidson College

Job Description

Full job description

Davidson is strongly committed to achieving excellence and culture diversity and welcomes applications from women, members of minority groups, and others who would bring additional dimensions to the college's mission.

Davidson campus police are sworn law enforcement officers and hold all the same powers as North Carolina municipal and county police officers granted under state statue 74-G. They maintain close relationships with other area police departments and work closely with the Davidson Police Department on community outreach initiatives and crime prevention.

Campus police employ a community-oriented policing and problem-solving approach to law enforcement and crime prevention. Community oriented policing is a philosophy, a management style and an organizational design that promotes police-community partnerships and proactive problem-solving strategies.

At Davidson, the campus police officers are integral members of the community and aim to create bonds of trust between the officers and campus community members.

While traditional law enforcement is necessary and has its place on a college campus, the concept of community-oriented policing helps to create a campus environment that promotes safe and healthy learning in addition to promoting acceptance of responsibility for one's own actions.

The campus police officer performs work involving the protection of life and property, the enforcement of laws and ordinances, the maintenance of order, and the investigation of crimes. The officer may perform specialized duties depending upon the individual officer's training, abilities and needs of the department. The officer applies the community policing philosophy in a fair and impartial manner to all aspects of providing public safety services in a college environment.

The campus police officer will perform all essential functions of a North Carolina Law Enforcement Officer including, effecting arrest; order maintenance; preparing investigative and accident reports; exercising independent judgement in search and seizure and arrest situations. The officer will also respond to calls for service, complaints, or reports of actual, possible, or potential occurrence of criminal activity.

The officer will be required to effectively communicate with people in all situations; administer immediate assistance to community members in critical and/or emergency situations where the protection of lives and/or property may be endangered; maintain control when confronted with verbal abuse; administer medical assistance based on level of training; and transport and process detainees.

Must possess certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission (NC BLET certification).

This position will be full-time. Some evening, holiday, and/or weekend work will be required. The position will include 12 hours rotating patrol shifts. May be required to work overtime, for, but not limited to, athletic events, Greek events, move-in/move-out, and commencement.
