The Counseling Center assists NC State University students experiencing personal, academic or vocational problems. The goal of the Counseling Center is to provide students with professional counseling services and outreach to help them cope with issues that may impede successful academic performance. The Counseling Center also offers crisis intervention and psychological/psychiatric assessment as well as consultation with others who have concerns about the mental/emotional state of NC State students. Our services are primarily short-term in nature and we make referrals to other helping professionals and community agencies as appropriate.

Essential Job Duties

The Behavioral Health Consultant position is a 12-month, 40-hour per week position with responsibility to assist in all areas of Counseling Center functioning including: Behavioral Health Consultant Responsibilities:

  • Assist with ongoing development of Behavioral Health Program which provides mental health consultations and clinical services that integrate services from the Counseling Center and Student Health Services.
  • Conduct mental health assessments, brief counseling, referrals, and supportive counseling to all students.
  • Provide crisis intervention assessments as needed and coordinate access to services through medical clinics.
  • General administrative responsibilities associated with responsibilities listed above.
  • Consult with co-treating providers (i.e., psychiatric, medical, nutrition), for integrated service provision.
  • Participate in policy development and operations as directed by administration.
  • Participate on an Eating Disorder Treatment Team.
  • Determine needs and areas of overlap, redundancy, and/or common goals between Student Health and the Counseling Center with regards to health services provision for NC State students. Serve as liaison between Directors of Student Health Services and Counseling Center.
  • Development and participation in Outreach programming.
  • Consultation with faculty staff, parents, and others.
  • Some participation in after hours “on call” and possible evening office hours.

Other Responsibilities

  • This position may involve participation in supervision/training of graduate students and program evaluation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Experience working collaboratively in a mental health setting.
  • Established commitment to multicultural competencies.
  • Strong clinical skills.
  • Experience handling crisis situations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated clinical experience in counseling and medical setting.
  • Ability to work hand-in-hand with medical providers to provide collaborative, integrated, and comprehensive medical and mental healthcare.
  • Experience in a university counseling center is strongly preferred.
  • Successful candidates will be generalists who are multi-culturally affirming and possess competence and experience in working with various student populations.
  • Preference for candidates with experience utilizing a time-limited model of care.
