Job Summary

The inaugural Director of Communications and Marketing for Campus Sustainability & Climate Action will build on existing efforts to develop and implement a comprehensive communications program in support of the university's campus commitments. You will play a pivotal role in supporting the Office of the Vice President for Communications (OVPC) as they manage U-M's reputation as a leader in this space. Leveraging the university's new executive-level sustainability leadership structure, our education and research strengths, internal and external networks and partnerships, and our campus as living and learning laboratory, the university seeks to amplify its story to unprecedented levels among its over 100,000 campus community members and more than 640,000 living alumni, as well as to local, regional, national and global communities.

The Director's responsibilities include leading, strategizing and overseeing marketing and communication related to University of Michigan's campus sustainability efforts, including its 2040 carbon neutrality commitment, overarching "Planet Blue" enterprise, and sustainability priorities outlined in the President's Vision 2034 framework and the Campus Plan 2050 report. Other responsibilities include internal and external messaging, perception management, leveraging internal and external networks, and through communications engage our community in action critical to equitable climate and sustainability solutions.

You will join the lead team reporting to the associate vice president for campus sustainability (AVPCS), within the Office of the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (EVPCFO), with a dotted line to the assistant vice president of strategic communications and marketing for business and finance. You will also work in close coordination with the two other executive sustainability leadership teams: the office of the vice provost for sustainability and climate action, and the senior vice president and chief environmental, social and governance officer at Michigan Medicine. Other important collaborators include the Office of the vice president for communications (OVPC), and a network of communicators in various units, including the Graham Sustainability Institute, the School for Environment and Sustainability, the Office of Campus Sustainability, and Student Life Sustainability, among others. You will initially supervise one direct report responsible for communications associated with Office of Campus Sustainability programs, as well as student interns as needed.

In the short term, this role is anticipated to achieve several key outcomes: enhance coordination among sustainability and climate action communicators within the university, create both short- and long-term communication and marketing plans aligned with institutional vision and goals, immediately manage communications and marketing for campus decarbonization projects, take responsibility for producing the annual impact report, and maintain and further develop the current "Planet Blue" enterprise resources along with its messaging channels and digital assets.

A sampling of sustainability communications channels include the Vision 2034, Campus Plan 2050, and Planet Blue websites, U-M Social, and the Record. Within the Planet Blue website are links to contributing partner units, both academic and operational, as well as external networks and partnerships.
