About the Department

The mission of Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) is to provide NCSU faculty with optimal animal resources. The term “animal resources” includes not only animal housing facilities, but also animal husbandry services, veterinary care, technical services, expertise in laboratory animal technology and medicine, and assurance of compliance with regulatory requirements and institutional policies for animal care and use. LAR is responsible for assisting faculty in conducting animal experimentation in keeping with these standards, and is committed to assuring the well-being of experimental animals while providing services that facilitate their humane and judicious use.

Essential Job Duties

The LAR Service Coordinator tracks and triages all LAR service requests daily. As the liaison between the LAR team and researchers, having a more in-depth knowledge of the areas of science and research applications, this position provides quick and accurate information regarding each patient or service. The coordinator will also monitor the listserv emails and manage replies and delegations. This position is classified as mandatory personnel and can require weekend and holiday work.

Additionally, this position is responsible for:
  • Ability to triage medical cases as reported and competent in delegating them to LAR staff as needed.
  • Creating, receiving, coordinating, and delegating TSRs for husbandry staff.
  • Creating appropriate signage and ensuring proper utilization of signs.
  • Acting as a liaison between researchers and staff for supply orders and inventory control.
  • Manage billing for these services and backup billing for LAR Administrator.
  • Proficient in entering data into electronic and paper medical records.
  • Responsible for scheduling rodent anesthesia requests.
  • Primary responsibility for handling the CPL/VS Inventory and ordering.
    • Includes the processing and storing of materials.
    • Includes refilling medications from the husbandry team.
  • Primary responsibility for coordinating the quarterly tasks of BCS of dogs.
  • Primary responsibility for executing the monthly tasks of HWP, CTOs, ATOs, and Stock Dog Preventive Medicine checks.
  • Schedule and maintain vehicle maintenance for the LAR fleet.
  • Fill out request forms for corporate users using LAR.
  • Calculates appropriate quantities of chemical(s) or drugs to ensure they are correctly mixed, applied, or injected.

Minimum Experience/Education

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Experience in a wide variety of species care and inventory control.
  • Experience in Laboratory Animal Medicine.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT).
  • LATG Certification
  • AALAS certification at the LAT level.

Required License or Certification

Valid NC Driver’s license or the ability to obtain NC license within 60 days of hire.
