Veterinary Farm Technician

Job Description

Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Veterinary Farm Technician for it's Research Animal Resources (RAR) service center. The purpose of this position is to provide veterinary care to two breeding colonies of non-human primates. The veterinary technician will be directly supervised by the clinical veterinarian and will interact with care staff and veterinary residents on a daily basis.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Animal treatment/care responsibilities

  • Administer medications for treatment via multiple routes including oral and parenteral.
  • Obtain diagnostic samples from nonhuman primates including but not limited to blood, urine, and feces.
  • Triage and provide care for nonhuman primate clinical cases – perform sedation, physical examination, fluid resuscitation and stabilization, intubation, IV catheterization, blood collection, subcutaneous fluid and drug administration, gavage, and other technical procedures.
  • Perform wound care and minor surgeries, to include infection debridement and cleaning, digit and tail amputations, basic wound repair, and bandaging.
  • Use and interpret diagnostic imaging for clinical purposes, such as ultrasound and digital x-ray.
  • Provide post-operative monitoring and care.
  • Maintain all clinical and surgical equipment including x-ray and anesthesia machines, ECG, cautery, autoclaves, etc.
  • Coordinate routine testing, physical examination, dental prophylaxis and interventions.
  • Assist with and coordinate care by veterinarians.
  • Perform daily census of animals.


Teaching

  • Train personnel in routine clinical treatments, sample collection, and diagnostics of nonhuman primates.


Inventory Control

  • Stock pharmacy with veterinary supplies and drugs.
  • Keep controlled substance log.
  • Order supplies and equipment for surgery and animal health care.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain animal records (paper and electronic).
  • Schedule surgery and technical service procedures.
  • Prepare bills for services provided.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree in Veterinary Technology or related discipline.
  • Some related experience.
  • Additional experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Certified veterinary technician strongly preferred.
