Essential Job Duties

We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Water Treatment Technician to oversee and maintain water treatment systems within the Utilities and Engineering Services Central Utility Plants. This role is crucial in ensuring the optimal operation of chemical injection systems and water chemistry across steam, condensate, chilled water, condenser water, and support water systems. You will be responsible for conducting regular water chemistry analyses, collaborating with water treatment vendors, and ensuring all systems are within the specified ranges. Key Responsibilities and Duties include ,but not limited to:
  • Take and analyze water samples to ensure compliance with system specifications
  • Dose chemical systems to approved levels, ensuring proper water chemistry
  • Verify the operations of water treatment equipment to ensure optimal performance
  • Install, maintain, and repair water treatment equipment with the support of the maintenance team
  • Use data trends to troubleshoot system deficiencies and make timely corrections to water chemistry issues
  • Maintain chemical supplies and inventory across all plants to ensure continuous operation
  • Manage chemistry readings, results, and logs for Central Utility Plant systems
  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled preventive and corrective maintenance on boilers, chillers, cooling towers, and co-generation equipment as required
  • Correct water treatment concentrations that fall outside of specified parameters
  • Diagnose and address issues related to excessive corrosion, dirt, scale, or other contaminants within plant systems
  • Identify malfunctioning equipment and initiate repair or replacement processes, including generating work requests when necessary
  • Offer technical support by troubleshooting standard water treatment issues and identifying their root causes
  • Contribute to planning major equipment cleaning cycles and check water treatment tests performed by others
  • Collaborate with inspectors, contractors, and department liaisons as needed

Other Responsibilities

  • This position is subject to emergency call-back as needed
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, safety shoes, and ear protection
  • Additional safety gear, such as a respirator, hard hat, or other site-specific equipment, may also be required
  • Designated as a critical employee, this role requires reporting to work during times when the university is closed

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
 
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Must be able to communicate effectively with supervisors and the general public and must be able to understand instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations
  • Experience in maintaining and repairing boilers, chillers, cooling towers, steam pressure reducing valves, motors, pumps, air compressors, and fans, as well as managing water treatment programs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in maintaining and repairing boilers, chillers, cooling towers, steam pressure reducing valves, motors, pumps, air compressors, and fans, as well as managing water treatment programs in a university setting.
  • Familiarity with federal and North Carolina safety policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Expertise in analyzing water treatment data and understanding the chemical effects and reactions in various water and steam systems.
  • Experience operating forklifts and JLG equipment.

Required License or Certification

  • Valid Driver’s License required
  • North Carolina driver’s license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained
