General Notes

One or two Postdoctoral researcher positions are available to work with Dr. Kelly Dorgan at The University of Texas Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas, TX, starting in January, 2025 (negotiable). Research in the lab integrates ecology, biomechanics (including engineering theory and methods), and invertebrate behavior, morphology and physiology with engineering theory and methods, including development of new instrumentation.

 

Postdoc research will be focused on understanding the mechanisms underlying bioturbation and/or on characterizing the impacts of infauna on deep sea sediment stability. Responsibilities may involve lab experiments and field work on sediments and burrowing animals. The positions are for 1-3 years, with extension past the first year dependent on performance and funding.

 

Candidates with strong backgrounds in biology or marine science who also have expertise in other sciences (math, physics/engineering, geology, etc.), creative writing or arts, or technical skills (workshop, electronics, etc.) are especially encouraged to apply.

 

Responsibilities

  • Review of relevant literature

  • Experimental design, trouble-shooting, and data analysis

  • Organize and participate in field work

  • Preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals

  • Present research results at professional conferences

  • Mentoring students and collaborating

  • Other duties as assigned

 

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant field (marine science, biology, geosciences, or other) received no more than 3 years ago

  • Peer-reviewed publications in a relevant field and strong writing skills

  • Programming experience

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in sediment ecology, biomechanics or bio-inspired design

  • Experience with invertebrates, experience doing lab experiments

  • Experience with image or video analysis

  • Experience in mentoring and collaborations

  • Experience with field work

 

Salary Range

$59,000 + depending on qualifications

 

Working Conditions

  • May work in all weather conditions

  • May work in remote marine or estuarine field sites, under especially hot conditions

  • May participate in extended research cruises (2-4 weeks)

  • May work around standard office conditions

  • May work around chemicals

  • May work around electrical and mechanical hazards

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
