Geophysical Specialist - Airborne Surveys

NV5 Geospatial is currently looking for a Geophysical Specialist to support airborne and UAS geophysical survey projects. In this role, your primary responsibilities will include collaboration with field acquisition teams, daily data processing, QC and generation of final, interpretable products for our magnetic and radiometric surveys. Your work will directly contribute to our understanding of subsurface conditions, mineral exploration, and environmental assessments. This is a remote position but requires extensive, daily online collaboration. You will work closely with our geophysical and project management teams and report directly to our lead geophysicist.

    Location: NV5 Geospatial Headquarters, Regional offices, or work from home considered
  • Willingness to travel to remote field locations when necessary (<5% travel expected).

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Data Processing: Process magnetic and radiometric data using specialized software and tools to enhance signal-to-noise ratios, correct for environmental factors, and create interpretable datasets.
  • Data Analysis: Analyze geophysical data to identify anomalies and patterns that may indicate geologic structure, mineral deposits or buried infrastructure.
  • Quality Control: Conduct thorough quality control to ensure accuracy and reliability and troubleshoot any issues in data acquisition or processing.
  • Interpretation: Collaborate with the geophysical team on interpretation and modeling to provide insights into geological and geophysical features of interest.
  • Survey design: Aid in site evaluations, feasibility studies and survey design.
  • Field crew collaboration: Update and support field acquisition teams.
  • Reporting: Aid in the preparation of technical reports summarizing survey logistics, data quality, and results.
  • Research and Development: Stay current with advancements in geophysical methods and instruments and explore innovative approaches to data processing, analysis and automation in our geophysical workflows.
  • Interact with NV5 clients on project tasks including meetings, presentations and proposal development.
  • This position involves remote, office-based work and requires daily remote collaboration with our geophysical team. Occasional fieldwork may be required with travel to remote locations, varying weather conditions, and physical exertion.
  • Adhere to all Health & Safety protocols and guidelines during fieldwork and data acquisition, ensuring a safe working environment for yourself and your team.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or appropriate work experience in geophysics or a related technical field.
  • Minimum 2-3 years experience in airborne geophysical data acquisition and/or processing.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Geosoft Oasis Montaj.
  • Good understanding of GNSS instruments and processing (e.g., Trimble, Novatel).
  • Experience with coordinate systems, mapping and GIS software (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS).
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Knowledge of safety and other regulations related to field work on mine sites, urban and environmentally sensitive areas.
  • Adaptability to evolving project requirements in a time critical setting.
  • Willingness to travel to remote field locations when necessary (<5% travel expected).
  • Willingness to flex work schedule to accommodate field acquisition schedules.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Geophysics or a related technical field.
  • 7 years experience with fixed-wing, helicopter and/or UAS-based magnetic and radiometric survey methods and data processing.
  • Good understanding of near-surface geophysics including gravity, magnetic, electrical and electromagnetic methods for ground, airborne and marine applications.
  • Good understanding of geophysical interpretation, modeling and inversion.
  • Familiarity with remote sensing methods (e.g., LIDAR, InSAR, Orthoimagery).
  • Basic programming and scripting skills (e.g. Python, MATLAB, Geosoft Gx).
  • Physical residence in a North or South American time zone.
  • Ability to obtain a DoD Security Clearance.
