Job Description:

Under general supervision, the Senior Maintenance Mechanic I (Repair) performs various building maintenance and repair work, including planning and laying out jobs and estimating the cost of materials and staffing requirements for work to be performed. Work assignments may cross into all aspects of maintaining and repairing buildings, equipment, and grounds, rather than in one specific trade or maintenance skill. The incumbent will operate equipment and devices, participate in snow removal, etc. as assigned.  The incumbent's work assignments result from written or oral instructions. The incumbent may work independently, as part of a crew, or as the lead worker on specific projects and supervises several lower-level maintenance and labor employees.

The Sr. Maintenance Mechanic I (Repair) has responsibility for determining methods, techniques, materials, and/or devices best suited to complete projects. Requisitioning items, supplies, and equipment and maintaining inventory records are among additional responsibilities. The incumbent recommends new equipment and methods to improve work performance; and performs routine and emergency repairs and maintenance, both scheduled and in response to emergencies, as required. The supervisor may check overall work to ensure that trade standards are met upon completion. The incumbent will perform related work as required.


Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Repair is defined as a variety of trades, including but not limited to plumbing, electricity, masonry, painting, and carpentry. The successful candidate is proficient in the skills and practices of various trades, with full knowledge of the principles, tools, and techniques used. The candidate must also have one of the following:

  •  A high school or equivalency diploma and four years of experience in the trade;
  •  Graduation from a two year post high school or trade school course and two years of experience in the trade;
  •  Seven years of work experience, five of which must have been in the trade.

The successful candidate must have possession of a valid New York State Driver's License appropriate to the type of equipment operated.  Depending on work assignment, must meet standards of OSHA regulation 1910.134 Respiratory Protection and will be required to meet federal, state and local standards with respect to health and safety. The incumbent must have physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and evidence of equity-minded practice in all college policies, practices, and personnel.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  It is preferred that the candidate have:

  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) plus experience operating large construction machineries such as backhoe, skid steer, and excavator
  • Fire alarm experience
  • HVAC controls experience
  • Carpentry/painting skills
  • Computer application skills
  • Snow plow experience


Additional Information:

POSITION EFFECTIVE:  The position will remain open until filled.

SALARY & BENEFITS: The starting salary is $55,823. Additional compensation with seniority steps maximize at a salary of $69,243.  Benefits include comprehensive health coverage, a choice of defined benefit or defined contribution pension plan, generous leave benefits, and access to tax sheltered annuities and a deferred compensation plan.

WORK SCHEDULE: The work schedule is Monday -Thursday from 1:00pm - 9:00pm and Friday 9:00am - 5:00pm.
