To ensure a safe and secure educational environment by providing a professional Law Enforcement presence and response on all SCC campuses. To effectively enforce all applicable federal, state and local laws as well as ordinances and policies of Surry Community College. Educate and train our campus community on responses of SCC’s Emergency Response Plan and uphold SCC’s mission to meet the needs of our campus community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
A. General security work (protection of state property and enforcement of applicable laws and ordinances).
B. Provide basic information and directions to campus personnel, students, and the general public.
C. Handle traffic control and parking issues for the campus.
D. Serve as first-responder for any campus emergency during hours of duty.
E. Respond to emergencies by assessing the situation and employing tact, diplomacy, and individual judgment in order to remedy and/or maintain control.
F. Conduct preliminary investigations of complaints and notify proper authorities as directed.
G. Deter, restrain, and/or arrest individuals attempting to inflict physical harm on themselves or others or to commit criminal acts.
H. Complete necessary paperwork related to incidents and/or arrests, to include gathering pertinent information from participants and/or witnesses and filing a daily activity log with the Vice Presidents.
I. Observe and report faulty and/or unsafe utility equipment, to include reporting fire and other safety precautions that are not in proper working order (fire extinguishers and emergency lighting to be checked monthly). Report items needing attention to the Director of Physical Facilities.
J. Patrol the buildings and grounds of the institution on foot and via motorized patrol.
K. Wear a professional police uniform and meet grooming and appearance standards typical of state and local law enforcement agencies.
L. Provide security presentations to staff, faculty, and students as directed.
M. Be an active member of the Campus Safety Committee.
N. Transport deposit to bank as needed.
O. Monitor bulletin board content to insure compliance with current policies.
P. Maintain a clean and safe work area.
Q. Other duties as assigned by the Chief of Campus Police.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common reports.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
- Ability to apply and understand standard mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
REASONING ABILITY:
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
- Ability to persuade and influence superiors, peers, and subordinates.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
- Understanding of and commitment to the unique nature and role of the College and to the philosophy of the community college system.
Required Qualifications
Current certification through North Carolina Criminal Justice Standards Commission as a Police Officer
Preferred Qualifications
Associate of Applied Science Degree in Criminal Justice or related field and three years of experience in law enforcement
