Postdoctoral Associate
Job Description
POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS)-Yet-Ming Chiang Group and Quantum Energy Science Group, to join an interdisciplinary research team investigating low-energy nuclear reactions in an ARPA-E research program. This research effort investigates reports of purported nuclear binding energy release in metal hydrogen systems from low-energy stimuli (e.g., laser pulses and induced phase transitions). Will lead replication efforts of experimental reports in the literature; work collaboratively to design novel experimental setups and protocols guided by recent theoretical insights and simulation results; and work at the intersection of quantum dynamics, nuclear physics, radiation diagnostics, and materials science and characterization. Accompanying theoretical efforts focus on the acceleration of hydrogen isotope fusion rates in metal hydrides as a result of collective superradiant effects (i.e., Dicke enhancement), which have been demonstrated to accelerate chemical reactions and nuclear decay.
Job Requirements:REQUIRED: Ph.D. in a relevant technical discipline (i.e., physics, electrical engineering, nuclear physics/engineering, materials science, etc.); interest in the application of quantum principles to energy science; ability to execute experimental work independently, design experiments collaboratively, and lead research teams and projects; strong quantitative analysis and oral and written communication skills; and experience in one or more of the following areas--design and assembly of vacuum chamber experimental setups, materials characterization (SEM-EDX, XRD, XRF, etc.), metal hydride materials science, quantum optics/dynamics or laser physics, or nuclear radiation detection. PREFERRED: experience in electrochemistry, gas management systems, high-pressure pellet pressing, infrared thermometry, high-temperature phase change materials, and/or Bayesian statistical modeling.
