System Security and Network Administrator

Job Description

SYSTEM SECURITY AND NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR, Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research (MKI), be responsible for the definition, installation, and management of network infrastructure in support of research activities.  Responsibilities include specifying, purchasing, installing, and maintaining departmental servers, including file servers, login servers, and license servers; installing, configuring, and maintaining software services, e.g., name servers, DHCP servers, and boot servers; providing advice on selection and purchase of computer and file servers for research; installing and maintaining systems in collaboration with project support staff; specifying, purchasing, installing, and maintaining network devices and infrastructure; debugging problems at all layers; designing and maintaining simple utilities for running the network; implementing backup utilities for servers; designing, installing, maintaining, and monitoring network and system security architectures; remediating after intrusions; providing advice on cybersecurity implementations and best practices; administering user accounts; documenting procedures, tools, and designs; and performing other duties as requested.  

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED:  bachelor’s degree in IT administration or related field; five years’ relevant work experience; experience defining, deploying, debugging, and maintaining network devices; experience specifying, purchasing, installing, and maintaining relevant server systems; ability to write simple utilities for network maintenance and operation, lift and install heavy equipment (20-50 lbs.), and collaborate with IT administration peers, scientific staff, and students; professional experience designing and implementing network and server security, including intrusion remediation; and experience with Linux and Mac OS X server implementation.  PREFERRED:  familiarity with virtual machines, high-performance computer hardware and software implementation, and relevant astrophysics research and/or associated data analysis; understanding of NIST controls for handling CUI and ITAR/EAR data; experience in an academic or research environment; and ability to write clear documentation.  Job #24200-10
