Campus Police Officer I (Multiple Openings)

Job Description

Campus Police Officers support the campus community, while providing exceptional customer service to the students, staff, and faculty in the community. Primary duties are patrolling the campus via foot or patrol vehicle, securing, and checking buildings, grounds, and adjacent areas, investigating crimes and other incidents, and enforcing state laws as well as departmental rules and regulations of the institution. Works in collaboration with the local community and the Salem State University Police Department. 

 

Shift, Days Off and Meal Break: TBD by shift bidding process; subject to change according to departmental needs. Must be available for off-shift overtime, including compulsory callbacks.

 

Salary: $62,696.33 annually/$1205.70 weekly

  1. Patrol the buildings and grounds of the University on foot or in a patrol vehicle to ensure the security of buildings and grounds and to guard against trespass, theft, damage to property, fire, and injury.
  2. Enforce state laws as well as the rules and regulations of the institution; restrain or arrest suspects when necessary.
  3. Aid courts or grand juries in the prosecution of cases.
  4. Enforce university traffic and safety regulations.
  5. Investigate crimes, traffic accidents and other matters, identify responsible individuals or criminal offenders and criminal activity and where appropriate, apprehend offenders and participate in subsequent court proceedings.
  6. Protect state and federal constitutional guarantees.
  7. Facilitate the movement of people and activities.
  8. Identify problems that are potentially serious in nature to the University and law enforcement or government entities.
  9. Create and maintain a feeling of security in the community.
  10. Promote and preserve civil order.
  11. Provide other services on an emergency basis.
  12. Perform specific duties and responsibilities as required by the Chief of Police or his/her designee.
  13. Responsible for the efficient performance of all duties in conformance with the rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and orders contained in all manuals issued by the Department.
  14. Other duties as assigned within the Campus Police Officer classification.

Minimum Entrance Requirements and Qualifications:

  1. Be eligible for certification as a law enforcement officer by the Police Officer Standards and Training Commission (POSTC) after satisfying all requirements. 
    • Successfully satisfy all requirements and pass the Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) prescreening process, including the physical fitness and endurance tests (e.g., HRD Physical Abilities Test, Cooper Test).  Successfully complete the MPTC approved basic police training academy or be eligible for an official MPTC exemption.    
    • Failure to meet the entrance requirements or to successfully complete the course of training shall result in dismissal or, for lateral appointment within the bargaining unit, return to previously held position in accordance with the AFSCME Agreement.
    • The candidate must be a U.S. citizen and at least 21 years old on the day the training academy begins
    • The candidate must possess a high school diploma or have passed the High School Equivalency Testing Program (HiSET), formally known as the GED
    • The candidate must successfully complete an entry-level academy operated by or approved by The Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC)
  2. Ability to pass a pre-employment medical exam
  3. Ability to pass an extensive background investigation and CORI Check. No person, who has been convicted of a felony or any offense punishable under M.G.L. Chapter 94C (drug law violations); or has been convicted of a misdemeanor and has been confined to any jail or house of correction as punishment for said crime, M.G.L. Chapter 22 C section 14, will be considered for employment
  4. Acknowledgement of mandated duties as a Responsible Employee (RE) under Title IX and as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
  5. Must be able to successfully complete a psychological exam
  6. Ability to obtain and maintain a MA License to Carry (LTC-A) license
  7. Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D motor vehicle operator's license
  8. Ability to pass a drug and/or alcohol test

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Graduation from an approved MPTC full-time police academy or have equivalent training that meets the exemption requirements of POSTC and MPTC
  2. Associate or bachelor’s degree in criminal justice
  3. Previous law enforcement, security, or equivalent military experience
  4. Possession of current CPR and First Responder certifications
  5. Bilingual

Campus Police Officers work under exposure to injury resulting from dangerous weapons, physical and verbal abuse and adverse weather conditions; may carry firearms; may operate motor vehicles at high speed for pursuit or emergency response purposes; work with people under physical and/or emotional stress; work alone in isolated or high-crime areas; walk and stand for prolonged periods of time; lift and carry heavy objects or people; may travel for job related purposes; and may be required to furnish private transportation for job-related travel for which mileage is reimbursed.

Failure to meet the entrance requirements or to successfully complete the course of training shall result in dismissal. Candidates must understand that there is a contractual commitment following academy training, once completed - per Appendix O of the AFSCME Collective Bargaining Agreement.
