Under supervision of the Chief of Sports Medicine and the Sports Affiliations Manager, the athletic trainer (AT) will support sports affiliations by providing patient and client support/education, communication, and patient healthcare.
Primary responsibilities: Acts as the primary point of contact for all sports teams under the care of UCSD Health (including but not limited to San Diego Padres, UCSD Athletics, SD Seals); will be promptly available to the designated team contacts during working hours and after hours as needed. Assist with the daily administration duties such as: returning client or patient phone calls/texts, communications, scheduling patient appointments, communicate appointment logistics and attend appointments, execute next steps in medical care, entering appropriate information into the Epic EMR, gathering records, coordinating coverage and travel. Effectively collaborates with multiple entities throughout UCSD Health to deliver services to clients/patients. Supports the Chief of Sports Medicine and Sports Medicine physicians with various clinical and administrative duties. Able and willing to travel to Spring Training and other Sports Affiliation work related events as needed. Organizes/coordinates pre-participation physicals and is present to assist with the delivery of these services. Delivers excellent customer service with all parties and will assist with logistics and attending client appointments, as needed. Additional responsibilities include: a clinical component of physician support and patient care, an outreach component of on-site athlete/coach education and/or event/game coverage, and an administrative component of assisting with projects and events.
In the medical clinic, the AT will assist as needed and when time permits, duties to include and not limited to: supporting the physician, patient prep and education, rooming/discharging patients, assist in the patient intake process, retrieval of necessary records relevant to the patient visit and supporting clinics/patient care, instruction in home exercise programs and return-to-activity protocols, return patient calls/messages. Assist with equipment/supply management, cleaning/disinfecting the environment and other tasks as assigned. Other clinical duties as assigned.
Outreach for the AT consists of delivering community outreach programs to our sports affiliation and community partners. The AT may provide medical coverage for athletic events/games sponsored by UC San Diego Health. The AT may also provide athletic training assistance for selected high school sports programs or athletic clubs. S/he will work independently as assigned, or in collaboration with athletic trainers, physicians, and other staff in delivering healthcare services for patients. S/he will be expected to establish or continue to facilitate a working relationship with those athletic clubs or teams where s/he is involved in delivering sports medicine services. The AT also assists with program and department projects and events, planning support for various athlete screening exams, and support for educational conferences and community event coverage. Participates in selected research projects.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSBachelor's Degree in Athletic Training or related field.
Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC).
Must have current ARC or AHA CPR/AED certifications.
Minimum of three (3+) or more years of experience as a certified athletic trainer.
Fluent in English and Spanish.
Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to interact effectively to establish cooperative working relationships with persons of diverse backgrounds and at various organizational levels within and outside the university.
Strong computer skills in programs relevant to job duties.
- Master's Degree in Athletic Training or related field.
- BART or BLS at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date.
- Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
- Work hours will include evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Possible travel, to assist at away events.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $67,200 - $119,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $32.18 - $57.28
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
