OVERVIEW OF THE PRESIDENT ROLE:
As President, you will lead Oregon Food Bank with guidance from the Board of Directors and collaboration with staff.

You will have overall responsibility for a $100M+ organization with 320+ employees, 15,000 volunteers, 40,000 donors, 5 branches, and engagement/support of a network of 21 regional food banks and 1400+ partner agencies throughout Oregon and SW Washington. You will work hand-in-hand with a dedicated Board of Directors and Staff to maintain and refresh Oregon Food Bank's 10-year vision and long-term strategic priorities. Your primary focus will be on external relations, such as donor, legislative and media relations and lead the oversight of the internal operation through the Vice President and other members of the staff.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE PRESIDENT:

  • Propose OFB’s vision and strategic direction for Board approval. Identifies strategic issues and opportunities to further OFB’s mission.
  • Represent OFB mission and vision with integrity and passion.
  • Collaborate with local organizations and stakeholders to support social justice initiatives and community outreach efforts.
  • Stay informed about current social justice issues and trends, integrating this knowledge into organizational practices and policies.
  • Overall day-to-day management of OFB, with focus on:
    • Philanthropy. Maintain a strong fundraising program at OFB. Participate in fundraising activities, including building relationships with major individual donors, major foundations, and key corporate funders.
    • Media. Maintain a strong strategic communications program at OFB. Participate in message development as needed.
    • Act as lead brand ambassador who promotes community engagement to develop the political will to address the root causes of hunger.
    • Partners. Be the main point of connection and relationship with Feeding America.
    • Maintain connections with the healthy networks of 21 regional food banks, 1400+ food assistance sites and community food systems partners. Participate in OFB network activities and build and maintain strong network relationships.
    • Government Relations. Maintain strong lobbying and grassroots policy advocacy programs at OFB. Cultivate key relationships with elected officials and government agencies at the local, state, and national levels. Promote activity and legislation to address the root causes of hunger.
  • Supervise and partner with the Vice President on:
    • Operational Oversight. Ensure the efficient and effective day-to-day operations of the organization, including administrative functions, program implementation, financial management, and compliance with regulatory requirements, to support the organization's mission and strategic goals.
    • Finance. Partner in presenting an annual budget to the Board for approval. Operate inside Board policy on out-of-budget expenses and reserve funds. Be accountable to the Board for prudent financial management of OFB funds, including timely and accurate financial statements, maintain an appropriate environment of internal controls and deliver annual audit with an unmodified audit opinion.
    • Work Plan. Implement an annual work planning process at the leadership team level and across departments to achieve strategic goals.
    • IT. Ensure OFB has strong information systems, including cybersecurity controls and technical capacity both in infrastructure and applications.
    • Staff. Oversight of HR through accountable directors to address hiring, training, supervision, evaluation, and termination. Support continued improvements to internal communications and organizational structure.
    • Internal policies. Develops and maintains administrative policies, procedures, and internal controls sufficient to maintain compliance with laws and contracts and to mitigate organizational liability and risk.
    • Insurance and Risk Assessment. Obtain the necessary insurance to protect OFB.
    • Interdepartmental Coordination. Ensure departments within OFB are well aligned, connected, and coordinated.
  • Support Board management and recruitment. This includes:
    • Participate in Board meetings and all Board committee work.
    • Partner with Board leadership to set agendas with adequate supporting materials.
    • Develop and implement Board orientations and other tools to support the Board in fulfilling its duties.
    • Assist Board in conducting self-evaluations and implementing recommendations.
    • Ensure Board receives regular communication and progress reports from OFB staff.
    • Conduct community outreach to identify, cultivate and recruit new Board members.
    • Stay abreast of Board legal requirements and best practices and offer guidance and suggestions for improvement as appropriate.
  • Co-supervise with the Vice President all OFB department directors. Lead hiring processes for department directors. Lead coaching and, if needed, performance improvement processes and termination for department directors.
  • Promote a work culture that is equitable, inclusive, mission-driven, positive, collaborative, and accountable.
  • Inspire staff commitment and engagement.
  • Act as senior staff approver, within Board policy. This includes negotiating and signing contracts and leases.
  • Be the lead expert on hunger in Oregon. Stay abreast of current data, trends, and food bank conversations.

 

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Deep passion for eliminating hunger and its root causes.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management experience at the Director or Manager level or Executive level for 3 years, with a minimum of five years in management or director roles, including at least five years of experience managing staff.
  • Strong financial management skills, including budgeting, financial planning, analysis, and reporting, with proven ability to manage complex budgets, ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Proven track record of fundraising and relationship development.
  • Experience in public policy, legislative processes, and government relations.
  • Strength in non-profit governance, organizational and board development, regulations and compliance.
  • Demonstrated skill in managing, motivating, and developing staff.
  • Demonstrated skill in developing organizational structure, workflows, and vision/ strategic plans.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities in strategic thinking and multi-organizational collaborations.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in public speaking and media relations.
  • Organizational level skills and experience required for exempt employees include:
  • Disposition and willingness to maximize multiple perspectives to innovate, problem solve and seek creative solutions.
  • Experience in modeling intercultural competence and demonstrated commitment to equity and social justice.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, collaborate, take initiative, and to maintain confidentiality.
  • Project coordination and organization skills; ability to manage multiple projects with attention to detail; ability to handle interruptions, and produce timely, accurate work.
  • Ability to both work independently and as part of a team; comfortable working in an office environment and offsite.
  • Ability to thrive in a diverse, creative, responsive, mission-driven, and fast-paced work culture.
  • Experience of successful multicultural immersion working and/or living within OFB's Equity Constituencies: BIPoC, Immigrants & Refugees, Single Mothers, Trans and Gender-Non-Conforming folx.
    • Multicultural Immersion is defined as: Actively integrated in one or more communities, interacting with individuals and groups, and seeking to understand the diversities within and between communities by being there and engaging in daily life activities.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Work experience in a social justice organization, food bank, anti-hunger organization or, anti-poverty organization.
  • Master’s degree in nonprofit management, business administration or related field or MBA preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience at the President, CEO, or Executive Director level, with at least three years in senior management roles and a minimum of three years of experience managing staff
  • Previous experience as a President, CEO, or Executive Director of a nonprofit organization preferred.
  • Formal training in nonprofit management and human resources or significant on-the-job experience.
  • Ability to communicate with constituencies of diverse political, economic and/or geographic backgrounds in a manner that recognizes differing points of view.
  • Experience in overseeing grassroots organizing or campaign. Experience with community organizing, grassroots organizing and/or advocacy initiatives that are aligned with the mission of OFB.
  • Experience in successfully implementing equity initiatives.
  • Valid driver’s license, safe driving record, current vehicle insurance and ability to use personal vehicle for OFB business.
  • Organizational level preferred qualifications of exempt employees include:
    • Multilingual skills at a minimum professional level of proficiency or greater in English and any additional language/s, defined as being able to speak the languages with sufficient structural accuracy and vocabulary to participate effectively in most formal and informal conversations on practical and professional topics.
    • Multicultural skills of adaptation and integration are strongly preferred.
    • Adaptation is defined as the capacity to communicate and interact with people of multiple cultures, backgrounds, and styles by incorporating and adapting to the world view and perspectives of others.
    • Integration is defined as being able to “code-switch” or move in and out of one's worldview and help others understand different cultures, backgrounds, and styles to promote diversity and inclusion.
    • Commitment to continued professional development to strengthen capacity to work through an equity lens for equity and racial justice.
    • Strong capacity to consider multiple perspectives, to pivot to respond to emerging needs and lead through organizational changes.
