Salary Range

Placement on the adjunct faculty salary schedule is based upon education and credited experience. Pending any course assignment, initial placement can range as follows: Lab Course - $84.55 up to $124.11 per hour. Lecture Course - $98.44 up to $143.19.

The Position

The College seeks part-time faculty to teach a variety of health and wellness courses. The ideal candidate will share the College’s commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.

The Wellness Department seeks candidates with expertise and experience in the multidisciplinary fields of integrative/complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)/holistic therapies, health, wellness, and well-being disciplines.

This position is a “pool” position meaning that openings may or may not be currently available. The District maintains a “pool” of applications for positions that are needed on an ongoing basis at Cañada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College. The advantage of “pool” positions is when a position becomes available, the Dean may immediately begin screening applications from the available pool of applicants without having to post a position and wait while the position is being advertised. Your application for this position will be kept current for a period of two years.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position.   1. Teach classes as assigned from the regular curriculum
  2. Assist in curriculum assessment, revisions, and new course development
  3. Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours
  4. Maintain expertise in current teaching methodologies and curricula
  5. Perform other professional duties as required by contract and general institutional needs

Minimum Qualifications

  • Any bachelor’s degree or higher and two years of professional experience OR any associate degree and six years of professional experience OR the equivalent (see below). Professional experience is required when the applicant possesses a master’s degree. The professional experience required must be directly related to the faculty member’s teaching assignment.
  • Two years of recent full-time or part-time equivalent experience teaching at the community college and/or college-level
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice both within and outside of the classroom

Equivalence to Minimum Qualifications

Degree Equivalence:
The applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different.

Academic Background Equivalence:
Related to disciplines in which a Master’s Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:

i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree, and
ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.

Professional Achievement Equivalence:
The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his/her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Subject Matter Preparation:
  1. Two years of recent full-time or part-time equivalent experience teaching in wellness, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)/holistic/integrative therapies, and/or sciences at the college level (lecture and lab-based courses)
  2. Three years of working in an integrative health and wellness environment
  3. Current knowledge and experience in the fields of health, wellness, and integrative/complementary and alternative medicine environments
Evidence of outstanding ability as a teacher:
In addition to a short classroom lecture or demonstration that may be part of the interview process, appropriate evidence includes, but is not limited to, experience, training, or achievement including:
  1. Demonstrated skills in communicating effectively, both written and orally, with students and colleagues
  2. Evidence of a strong commitment to remain current in health, wellness, well-being, and integrative/CAM/holistic therapies
  3. Experience in designing health, wellness, well-being, and integrative/CAM/holistic therapy curriculum
  4. Evidence of experience and proficiency in the utilization of the laboratory and laboratory equipment and the associated instruction appropriate for various health, wellness, and well-being-related courses
  5. The ability to develop instructional learning outcomes and to develop methods for assessing students’ achievement of these outcomes, as well as to ensure consistent and appropriate monitoring of student progress and use the assessment of one’s pedagogy and examine its effect critically
  6. Commitment to creative use of technology in teaching and learning, in environments such as computer-assisted or smart classrooms, class websites, or online platforms
  7. The ability to engage students from a broad spectrum of academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds both in the classroom and in consultation either in person or through the use of technology
  8. The enthusiasm for, understanding of, and commitment to the role and purpose of the community college
  9. A commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and enthusiasm for the mission of the College
  10. The ability to use teaching methods that engage students actively in their learning, promote the development of critical thinking skills, and encourage them to become lifelong learners
  11. The ability to use instructional methods that emphasize group cooperation and collaboration and that reflect cultural sensitivity and interdisciplinary approaches to the subject matter
  12. The commitment to maintain currency in the discipline, and related technology appropriate for integrative/holistic health, wellness, and well-being instruction
  13. Ability to organize and explain materials in ways appropriate to students with differing abilities, levels of preparation, and cultural experience
  14. Commitment to the scholarship of teaching and learning including the ability to reflect on and evaluate the effectiveness of one’s pedagogy and to make such reflection public
Evidence of effectiveness as a colleague:
  1. The ability, initiative, and commitment to work collaboratively with faculty and staff in the spirit of collegiality and innovation to enhance instruction, curriculum, and student success
  2. Commitment to professional responsibilities outside of the classroom through enthusiastic contributions to department, division, and college activities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional and/or educational experience in a variety of health and wellness-related professions
  • Professional experience in delivering integrative health modalities including naturopathic medicine, acupuncture, or osteopathic medicine
  • Professional experience working as part of a multidisciplinary health team
  • Recent community college or lower division teaching experience
  • Recent experience working with racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and particular fields shape patterns of participation and outcomes
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students
  • Experience and skill with addressing inequity in the classroom and on campus
  • Experience and expertise in culturally-responsive teaching
  • Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within wellness courses and classrooms
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving Institution designation for institutional, departmental, and instructional practices
