Duties and Responsibilities

Application Pool Notice 

Laredo College continuously accepts applications for part-time (adjunct) instructors to create a pool of candidates for each session/semester. Applications will be reviewed and positions will be filled based on department needs. Applications received for this pool will remain active for one year.


Position Requirements 

Upon employment, candidate must reside in the state of Texas.  


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provide instruction and monitor teaching/learning effectiveness in courses assigned by the Department Chair, Dean of Workforce Education or Provost/Vice-President of Academic Affairs. Use up-to-date curriculum and pedagogical skills to ensure active participation and learning by students.

 

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Stay current on changes that occur in the discipline. Participate in departmental initiatives to infuse changes in curriculum. Participate in interdisciplinary discussions which are directed at improving student learning and evaluating core competencies curriculum.

  2. Prepare and, on the first day of class, distribute syllabi that inform students about course requirements, grading requirements, texting assignments, absence policy, and other pertinent information for each course assigned.

  3. Prepare a professional development plan in consultation with the Department Chair, and work with the assigned peer/mentor.

  4. Prepare, administer, and grade assignments and examinations in a timely manner to inform students about their progress and to provide opportunities that will allow students to succeed. Use multiple measurements of assessment. Include opportunities for research and outside assignments.

  5. Provide a safe environment for students and be responsible for the security of assigned equipment, materials, and classrooms.

  6. Encourage the use of support services by students. Collaborate with support staff to ensure that appropriate information is being shared and discussed.

  7. Participate as a faculty advisor during the registration process and during the semester by providing accurate career counseling and guidance at the time assigned by the Department Chair or Dean. Use the Program Degree Guide on an ongoing basis to maintain current information about each student.

  8. Provide appropriate information to Library staff regarding desired discipline materials.

  9. Respond to requests for information from the Dean or VP's office.

  10. Follow procedures related to the Administration/Registration office, including grade reports and deadlines; attendance record reports; withdrawal deadlines; class changes; and time and room scheduling.

  11. Participate in the preparation and updating of class schedules and college catalog.

  12. Distribute student evaluation forms on a timely basis.

  13. Participate in faculty evaluations as described by the Department Chair and/or the Dean.

  14. Serve as a mentor when requested.

  15. Follow proper procedures for requesting textbooks, instructional supplies, and expendable supplies; submit travel and absence reports on a timely basis.

  16. Participate in a career day for elementary and secondary school students; participate in civic activities for the purpose of communication services provided by the college.

  17. Promote the College's programs and curricula.

  18. Follow the academic calendar and other policies and procedures adopted by the Board of Trustees.

  19. Participate in Southern Association accreditation activities; implement Institutional Effectiveness plan in the occupational area.

  20. Perform other assigned duties by the Department Chair, Dean of Workforce Education, and the Provost/ Vice-President of Academic Affairs.

Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:

  • Candidate must have a High School Diploma or GED. Applicant must have a Journeyman Electrician License and a Master Electrician License.

  • 5 years of work experience as a Journeyman Electrician.

  • Journeyman Electrician License and a Master Electrician License.

Preferred:

  • 2-year Electrical Certificate from an accredited college.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Discipline competence; pedagogical competence which engages the student and focuses on student learning ability to operate specialized laboratory equipment. 

  • Ability to use current technology to enhance teaching effectiveness. 

  • Concern with academic progress of students. 

  • Cooperative and professionalism in dealings with College Administrators, Colleagues, and students.

Physical Requirements  

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.  

The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch.  

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment 

Work is performed in a standard office environment.    

Work inside a well-lighted and air-conditioned area most of the time.  

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
